Veeda Software Launches e-newsletter

Welcome to the inaugural edition of our e-newsletter, the Visioneer. Veeda Software expects to publish it on a quarterly basis. Along with the website, marketing collateral materials, and mailings, this publication will keep our public informed as to what is happening here in Newton.

The distribution of the Visioneer is expected to grow. The audience is composed of clients, prospects, suppliers, and friends of our firm. These groups are in a very real sense our “public.”

We are following a format that we have found successful in the past. Each issue will contain a feature story on page one. This article, the one you are reading now, is typical of such a story. It tries to convey to you, our reader, things we talk about when our staff gets together. While the newness of the news might be one or two months old, not everyone looks at our web site on a daily basis. There is a strong desire on our part that you be kept informed on what is going on.

There will always be a message from Hendrick in a column called President’s Corner. Here he will chat in a very informal way about the direction Veeda will be going. No matter how big our company grows, he will always give the personal touch to everything we do.

On the inside you should expect to see an article that is more technically orientated. In this edition it is entitled “How Telephony Projects Fail.” Here one of the staff will discuss some small aspect of the technology we are crafting on a daily basis. The purpose of such an article is to give you insight into our thought process and suggest ideas that you can use in your own firm.

We are quite proud of the sophistication of our customers. Each quarter you will find a “success” story about one of them.

This issue contains a story about CentrAlert, Inc. It is told through the vehicle of an interview between Veeda Software’s Robert Schuldenfrei and CentrAlert’s Dwight Brayton. The relationship between the people of Veeda Software and the people of CentrAlert, although new, has become strong with the execution of a number of projects. We are planning new work such that CentrAlert is rapidly becoming an old client.

The remainder of the issue will be devoted to as many news stories as we deem important. Two of them made the first issue. First, we wanted to introduce our staff to you. While it is true that we are a young and small organization, we have an extremely talented staff of software engineers. We wanted you to meet some of them. Second, the renting of office space was a significant step in our development. We thought that this was important and that you might want to know about it. If you are ever in the neighborhood, drop by and at least have a cup of excellent coffee with us.

What is in a name? This e-newsletter not only transmits to you what we have done and where we have been. The major focus of the Visioneer is where we are going. It is truly our vision of the future. One of our core beliefs is to be on the cutting edge of software technology. This publication supports that concept.

We are never afraid of trying the new or confronting the old. Veeda Software relishes change! It is change, however, based on solid research, study, and debate. Our products and services stand on a foundation of scientific achievements and discoveries.

In spite of the day to day process of shipping solutions, all of us are constantly learning the latest techniques and adapting them into our work. This personal growth not only enriches our staff, but makes the products and services our clients buy demonstrably better.

This philosophy of employing the new permeates everything we do. Not only do we create communications technology, but we use it ourselves. For example, we have a daily video conference with one of our staff located many miles from Newton, Massachusetts.

As this issue of the Visioneer goes to “press,” Veeda Software is beginning a new engagement that promises to be our largest single contract. While we cannot get into the details of this new work at this time, we will be developing new tools and techniques that will benefit all of our present and future clients. As this project progresses it will be reported in the pages of this e-newsletter and on our web site. In this way we involve you, our community in everything we do.

Creating the future is not only a rewarding career, it is fun too. By working on the cutting edge we get to play with marvelous toys. They are often their own reward. There is a certain thrill in seeing an inanimate object, like a surveillance camera or data displaying glasses, behave like it is a living being through the magic of computer programs created by Veeda Software.

President's Corner

Hendrick Melo - Veeda Software's PresidentVeeda Software has had extremely rapid growth. Since our formation in 2005 we have hired staff, obtained office space, created a web site, and launched an e-newsletter. All of this has taken place while we have successfully completed a series of engagements.

Since long before the founding of our firm I have wanted to create an e-newsletter as a vehicle of communications between us and our public. With this first edition of the Visioneer, that desire has been realized. As the name implies, this publication will not only report on what we have done, but our vision of the future. This talk about the future is not only interesting, it keeps the firm young and vibrant.

One of the dangers a small company faces is that we become too set in our ways. There are some advantages in being small and the most important one is that we are agile. By focusing on where we are going allows us to use this agility wisely. This is why we have used up so much space here talking about philosophy with you our public.

I expect to write this column every quarter giving you, our clients, suppliers, and friends the view of the road ahead from where I sit.

How Telephony Projects Fail

Since our founding in 2005, Veeda Software has been called in to rescue a number of failing telephony projects. It is useful, therefore to understand just how these projects fail.

In addition to the “normal” ways that any computer based project gets into trouble, there are a few things unique to telephony. All software jobs can get into trouble because management fails to back the project or code is written without design. But, telephony applications have the following added issues.

Schools, even in Computer Science, fail to teach in detail the multi-threaded intricacies at the base of all telephony applications. IT departments are lead to believe that developing these apps is just like developing standard data processing apps.

The providers of telephony hardware do little to dispel the myth that developing a telephony solution is “easy.” “Hey boss, why don’t we add voice appointment scheduling to our web site?”

A project gets started after a considerable amount of effort seems to work in a “toy” environment. When a realistic call load is placed on the system bad things begin to happen. The computer system gets overloaded. Resources get consumed until they are used up. Systems start to panic and then crash.

What happened? The system was never well-designed in the first place. All of the band aids in the world will not stop the bleeding. If the requirements for the application include handling large numbers of calls, and most do, then a professional telephony architecture needs to be designed, developed, and deployed. This is the only way to insure that the system will meet its specified requirements.

Veeda Software has been crafting these architectures for our clients. In fact, the principals of Veeda have been doing this for ten years. Over that time period we have developed the tools and techniques that make us the guarantors of your success.

CentrAlert Benefits From Veeda's Help

Veeda Software has recently completed three projects for CentrAlert of Kennewick, WA. They are an alert and notification system software company according to Dwight Brayton, Vice President, Production and Operations.

CentrAlert had a telephony project underway using Cantata’s Brooktrout TR1000 voice card. The firm that was writing the software produced code that worked, but it lacked the required throughput.

Cantata's Praise for Veeda SoftwareCentrAlert contacted Cantata for help, and Cantata recommended Veeda Software as a firm that could complete the job to the required specifications.

As a result of Cantata’s suggestion and further vetting of Veeda’s abilities through telephone interviews, Veeda won the engagement. The first project was to produce a simplified API that would work in background to control the TR1000. The first project was to produce a simplified API that would work in background to control the TR1000.

Based on the success of that project, we were asked to improve the higher level device adapter module in the application. In order to do that project Veeda first turned its attention to fixing a bug in the “chat” module. With that out of the way, we went on to produce the device adapter as the second project.

In order to provide a low cost option to their clients, CentrAlert engaged Veeda Software a third time. This third engagement consisted of building the same simplified API to control voice modems. By doing this you obviated the need for a telephony card in settings that only need but one line.

According to Dwight, the projects ran smoothly in spite of the fact that CentrAlert is on the West Coast and we are in the East. “Even though there was a ‘time delta,’ we were able to get information back and forth.”

Looking down the road, Dwight suggested that VOIP is going to play an ever increasing role in the alert and notification industry. “VOIP is going to be very big,” Dwight explained. “There is going to be expansions into new technologies.”
